  • The Veterans Independence Program

VIP is a national home care program provided by Veterans Affairs Canada.

One program option is home adaptations to modify things like bathrooms, kitchens and doorways for safety and accessibility.

Most clients who receive VIP are veterans or others that qualify for veterans services.

  • Home Adaptations for Seniors Independence Program (HASI)

This program, which is through Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation) helps homeowners and landlords pay for minor home adaptations to extend the time low-income seniors can live in their own homes independently.

Assistance is a forgiveable loan of up to $3,500. The loan does not have to be repaid as long as the homeowner agrees to continue to occupy the unit for the loan forgiveness period, which is six months. If the adaptation work is being done on a rental unit, the landlord must agree that rents will not increase as a result.

  • Homeowner Residential Rehabilitation Assistance Program (RRAP)

The Homeowner RRAP offers financial assistance to low-income homeowners or landlords who undertake accessibility work to modify dwellings occupied or intended for occupancy for low-income persons with disabilities (some conditions apply).

The homeowner may apply if the value of their house is below a specified figure; and their household income is at or below established ceilings (limits) based on household size and area.

Assistance is in the form of a forgiveable loan. The maximum loan amounts vary according to the three geographic zones. Assistance may be available in areas defined as remote. Maximum assistance is $16,000 - $24,000, depending on zone. Written approval for the program must be received before work commences.

  • Federal Tax Credits

If you have medical expenses associated with a disability, you maty be able to claim them to reduce your taxes. Examples of allowable medical expenses are:

  • T2201: Disability Tax Credit Certificate
          - for individuals with severe and prolonged impairment
          - fill out the form online, print, and mail to the appropriate tax centre (listed on the form)
  • Payments for certain assistive devices.
  • Certain building and renovating costs so you can have better access and mobility in your home.

  • President's Choice Children's Charity

President's Choice Children's Charity is dedicated to helping children who are physically or developmentally challenged. Their aim is to remove some of the obstacles that make everyday living extremely difficult and make it a little easier for the child or family to cope with the disability.

They provide direct financial assistance in the purchase of expensive mobility equipment, environmental modifications, and physical therapy and more.

  • Assistance for Children with Severe Disabilities - Ontario Only

The Assistance for Children with Severe Disabilities (ACSD) program, formerly known as the Handicapped Children's Benefit (HCB), provides help to parents to assist with some of the extra costs of caring for a child who has a disability.

The purpose of the benefit is to help children who have disabilities live as normal a life as possible at home and in the community. In order to qualify for this program, financial and medical criteria must be met.

ACSD funding may include monthly financial assistance and/or extraordinary costs related to the child's condition. Parents need to obtain an application form from the nearest MCYS regional office.
